Is the Mad Magazine Cancellation News Report Truth or Is It Satire?

Since being linked on Instapundit (thanks to Ed Driscoll) and Maggie's Farm, the recent "news report" on No Pasarán — "Mad Magazine Fact-Checked by Snopes, Denounced by the New York Times, Censored by Amazon, Banned by Facebook, and Slammed by SJWs" — has caused no small amount of commotion in a number of comments sections, with a rather large number of readers either taking it outright as truth or wondering whether it was truth or satire. (An additional number of readers have been noting — correctly — that the very fact that we are wondering about whether it is fact or fiction is quite a sad commentary on our times.)

To answer the question, and since Poe's Law has been mentioned, you must first understand how the Mad Magazine news report came about. (If you are pressed for time, scroll down to the sentence in bold.)

1) THE BIRTH OF THE BABYLON BEE

Three or four years ago, devoted Instapundit readers started learning of a new humor site by seeing hyperlinks to hilarious and often spot-on "news reports" penned by members of "Your Trusted Source For Christian News Satire."

In March 2018 came the scandal or, perhaps, the consecration: In a news report — one that not even The Babylon Bee could have made up — a Bee "news report" was fact-checked by Snopes (and called False). What makes the news item (the real one) doubly funny — and the Snopes website open to ridicule — is that the news item (the fake one) is utterly preposterous. (Just take the title: Did CNN Purchase an Industrial-Sized Washing Machine to Spin News?)

Soon, news outlets start chiming in — and doubling down in their defense of Snopes — saying basically, "Sure, the Bee says it is 'Your Trusted Source For Christian News Satire', but how can we expect everybody to know that it is news satire?"

FYI (and in Snopes's defense), David Mikkelson has invented a whole new group of ratings (after True, Mostly False, etc), including one called Labeled Satire (which, indeed, has replaced False on the CNN washing machine report); now regularly subtitles its Bee reports as A routine review of content labeled satire; and has penned a far-from-unreasonable editorial called Why We Include Humor and Satire in Snopes.com (although he gets points off by managing to avoid any mention whatsoever of the Babylon Bee ).

Still, that hardly justifies the Bee getting threatened regularly with cancellations, de-platformings, or demonetizations by the likes of Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

As Christian Toto writes on RealClearInvestigations, satirizing George Orwell's 1984 in the process,

The Babylon Bee, the right’s online answer to the satirical site The Onion, has been at war with Facebook for years

For this reason — and because the Bee's reports are so spot-on — Glenn Reynolds and Ed Driscoll have transferred the title usually bestowed on the New York Times, "The Newspaper of Record," to the Bee.

“Satire doesn’t have the intent of misleading people.
… It’s communicating truth through satire.”

— Seth Dillon, CEO of the Babylon Bee

Incidentally, before we get to the meat of this post, as an aside, here are a couple of Babylon Bee stories that prove Seth Dillon's words correct and that I have most enjoyed in the past month or so:
• Elizabeth Warren Barred From Entering Country Thanks To Travel Ban On Indians,
• In Push For Diversity, Military Canine Units To Give Equal Opportunities To Chihuahuas (For the first time, the military — which has always favored German Shepherds in the past — will admit other breeds such as Chihuahuas and Pomeranians),
• New M1 Abrams Tanks To Come Equipped With Changing Tables (In addition to the changing table, each new tank will also be slightly larger in order to fit a private lounge for breastfeeding … The new tanks should be deployed worldwide very soon, as many hotspots aren’t doing very well since backup troops had to be rerouted to rebut Tucker Carlson on Twitter),
• Billions In Damages As Military Allows Women To Park The Tanks (Billions of dollars of military equipment were destroyed today after several women were asked to park the tanks, even though women are really bad at parallel parking), and
• Biden Admits His First 100 Days Were A Failure Since America Hasn't Been Completely Destroyed Yet (It was a simple plan. After the wildly successful Trump presidency made America great again, the Democrats used the pandemic (which wasn’t really a big deal) to destroy the flourishing economy. All that they needed after that was to steal the presidential election (check) and get a meager majority in Congress to enact a radical, unconstitutional agenda to finish off the nation, the people Democrats hate more than any other).

2) THE BIRTH OF THE MAD MAGAZINE YARN

And here is where things get interesting: it may have been Ed, or Sarah Hoyt, or Stephen Green, but I believe it was Glenn who linked to a Babylon Bee article written by an outside source who had contributed to the website.

It turns out that people who are Prime Subscribers to the BB are (or were: see below) allowed to submit (or to pitch) articles.

Since I am known for having quite an appetite for satire, and since I am a comedy writer, I start developing my ideas for another humor outlet undergoing the same treatment and travails as the Babylon Bee. The Mad Magazine report would double as a very strong point in their favor, which they would love (I thought) to have added on their website.

Besides, I agree with the comment "The Babylon Bee Needs Your Support. Help us Save Comedy. Fight Against CNN and Snopes", and so I opened my wallet last year to become a prime subscriber.

After I put a lot of effort into the piece and after a long series of ordeals (after I finished the article in November, I lost 85% of the article on Blogspot — do not press Control Z more than once in a row after Blogspot's recent (so-called) upgrade (sic) or the entire text disappears! — and it took me four months to get the courage to re-write it), I — proudly — submitted it to the Babylon Bee last week.

Result?

Extreme letdown.

In spite of their promise to this (and to all) Prime Subscriber(s), the Bee replied to the pitch with the comment that they cannot, and do not, accept outside material (with the exception of headlines). (What happened? Who knows? Maybe they had problems with one of their contributors and/or maybe some lawyer intervened with copyright issues or something…)

So there is your answer: the Mad Magazine news report
was intended to appear on the Babylon Bee website.
As a typical piece of Babylon Bee news satire.

And since I had put a lot of work into the story, and since I was pretty proud of the result, I simply decided that if nobody else wanted it, I would publish it on my blog No Pasarán. (I still read — and laugh at — the Bee's articles, although I probably laugh only 90% as heartily as before.)

If it had appeared on the Bee, everybody would have known immediately that it was satire, needless to say. (Are you listening, Facebook? Snopes?)

As for Instapundit's readers, quite a few, presumably, headed to the comments section in outrage after reading the headline without also clicking the hyperlink and reading (or skimming through) the story.

If they had, they would have had their antenna up already by the second sentence, with the identification of the Snopes spokesman as a certain Bobby Snopes Jr (even without realizing it was an homage to the Babylon Bee's parodies, often referring to a Snopes spokesman as one Bob Snopes).

There are, needless to say, many more hints that the story is not true, but to mention just two, there is the name of the SJW spokesperson (a typical Don Martin-type joke) and there is the lengthy paragraph (where the blockquote is located) of the demented Twitter spokesman who proceeds to try to prove why Alfred E Neuman is an undercover "conservative spewing Republican propaganda."

That said, even the title itself, to tell the truth, should have made people suspicious: it is utterly improbable that a headline would have listed all of the various cancellation actors — especially with a different action verb for each one. A real title would have used something like "controversial magazine in danger of cancellations from Snopes, the New York Times, and other sources," or something in that (jugular) vein.

Babylon Bee: Biden Admits His First 100 Days Were A Failure Since America Hasn't Yet Been Completely Destroyed

From the Babylon Bee:

As President Joe Biden’s first 100 days come to a close, he admitted to the press that he mainly saw his first months in office as a failure, as he was unable to achieve the primary goal of any Democrat: the complete destruction of the United States of America.

“If there is one thing that unites all Democrats,” Biden said, “it’s hatred of America and all of its freedoms. With me seizing the country after it’s been staggered by the pandemic, there was an opportunity for me to immediately eradicate this country. But I failed.”

It was a simple plan. After the wildly successful Trump presidency made America great again, the Democrats used the pandemic (which wasn’t really a big deal) to destroy the flourishing economy. All that they needed after that was to steal the presidential election (check) and get a meager majority in Congress to enact a radical, unconstitutional agenda to finish off the nation, the people Democrats hate more than any other.

“I thought I could destroy all freedom in 100 days with my executive orders and the help of the Senate,” Biden stated, “but I couldn’t do it. The American people are too resilient; I hate them so much.”

Related — Here are some more Babylon Bee stories from the past month or so that I have enjoyed:

The fact that thousands of healthcare professionals have misgivings about the vaccine should be enough to spark a real conversation

I think we all know that the people who have made things this way are hoping we’re still stuck on this for years

writes Stephen Kruiser at PJ Media regarding the global (and manufactured) vaccine insanity.

We’ve got a bunch of godless heathen leftists who are drunk on false virtue and using it to make the government creep ever more into our lives. They’re not going to give that up easily.

The real-world consequences of Vax Mandate Mania are showing up more and more lately, usually in the form of people losing jobs. The heavy hand of the government vax pimps isn’t helping to win the hearts and minds of those who are opposed to getting vaccinated. They’re losing their jobs rather than roll the dice on a medical decision that doesn’t make them feel comfortable.

… The vax Nazis love to frame [any] principled opposition as nothing more than a knee-jerk political stance by a bunch of right-wing nutjobs. Everyone I know who isn’t vaccinated has thought very carefully about it and all have sound reasons for opting out. In fact, many of them were planning on eventually get vaccinated but have been put off by the over-the-top rudeness of the vax pimps.

People don’t leave careers just because they’re in the mood to make a political statement. The fact that so many healthcare professionals have misgivings about the vaccine should be enough to spark a real conversation.

The lefty vax freaks are having too much fun being jerks about it though. They are miserable people who only find joy in spreading their emotional inadequacy and misery to others. It’s safe to say that they’re thrilled that people are losing their jobs over this.

Regarding the (entirely reasonable) statement about the "fact that so many healthcare professionals [having] misgivings about the vaccine should be enough to spark a real conversation", we have another Babylon Bee prediction come true: CDC Reminds People To Listen To All Medical Professionals Except For The Tens Of Thousands Who Refused The Vaccine.

Speaking of which:

One Thing that Putin Did Get Right: After January 6, "Over 400 Americans had criminal charges places against them, face prison sentences up to maybe even 25 years; they're being called domestic terrorists"

Even Vladimir Putin, of all people, sees what is going on in America.

When asked in June 2021 (the year before the Kremlin invaded Ukraine), "If all of your political opponents are dead, in prison, poisoned, doesn't that send a message that you do not want a fair political fight?", he responded as follows below.

While we do not agree with 's (rosy?) portrait of Putin (especially in the aftermath of the Ukraine war), nobody can deny that Russia's president did provide a reply that unexpectedly brought January 6 into the debate:

"As for who is killing whom or throwing whom in jail, people came to the US Congress for political demands. 400 people. Over 400 people had criminal charges places against them, face prison sentences up to maybe even 25 years. They're being called domestic terrorists. They're being accused of a number of their crimes. Some of them were arrested right away after the events and 30 of them are still under arrest. It's unclear on what grounds. And as for the [unclear] authorities have informed us about it. Some people died and one of the people that died was simply shot on the spot by the police although they weren't threatening the police with any weapons. In many counties, the same thing happens that happens in our country. I'd like to stress once more that we sympathize with what happened in the United States but we have no desire to let the same thing to happen in our country."

The whole affair recently led the Babylon Bee go for the tongue-in-cheek headlines, Putin Impressed With American System Of Prosecuting Political Opponents and Democrats Vow To Arrest As Many Political Opponents As It Takes To Defeat Fascism.

Related: When satire becomes reality by Kassy Dillon of Fox News: Nearly 100 Babylon Bee joke stories have come true

Civil Deadline quotes Fox News:

During the segment, [Tucker] Carlson explained, “While stipulating that all riots are bad because precision matters, facts matter. The truth matters. Here’s the truth: More cops were injured by Kamala Harris’s favorite mob, BLM, at the White House than were injured by Trump voters at the Capitol on January 6. A lot more!”

But the highest-rated Primetime news anchor went on to explain why January 6 is part of a much bigger plan. Carlson said, “So, again, to be clear, both events are bad. But here’s the key: we only remember one of them. Why? The people in charge of history are liars, liars. And lying is bad. And on a national scale, it’s deadly.”

“It’s corrosive of everything that is good in the country, including trust and your grasp on reality itself. And that’s where they try to make you lie. Men can become women. Climate change is an existential threat, or whatever the lie is they’re making you tell, they don’t believe it. They know you don’t believe it. But by forcing you to repeat it, they degrade and control you. They make you less of a person.”

The lies and scams perpetrated by the radical left are destroying our nation. But their biggest lie may well be what actually happened on January 6. However, it could prove to be their undoing. Video doesn’t lie. The footage from the Capitol's surveillance cameras on January 6 tells a very different story than what the left claims happened.

It Turns Out that Most People Who Are Against Circumcision — in Order to Prevent Harm to "Defenseless" Babies — Are Leftists Who Also Happen to Be in Favor of Abortion

Another contribution to the Babylon Bee:

It Turns Out that Most People Who Are Against the Procedure of Circumcision — Because It Is Allegedly "a Violation" of the Rights of the Child (i.e., in Order to Prevent Harm to "Defenseless" Babies) — Are Leftists Who Also Happen to Be in Favor of Abortion

Treacher: Them "Rules Wouldn't Keep Changin' If You Peasants Just Did What You're Told at That Particular Moment"

"The Rules Wouldn't Keep Changing If You Peasants Just Did What You're Told at That Particular Moment" quips Jim Treacher (thanks to Ed Driscoll) as he imagines how our betters think:

We got some new COVID-19 rules yesterday. They were different than the rules we got the day before that, and I assume they’re different than the rules we’ll get tomorrow.

To recap:

  1. Absolutely do not wear a mask

  2. You must, must, must wear a mask or you’re killing Grandma

  3. Don’t leave the house or you’re killing Grandma

  4. If you can’t avoid leaving the house, stay at least six feet away from any other human being you see or you’re killing Grandma

  5. Wash your hands 20 times a day

  6. Do not touch your face or anything else, ever

  7. Get vaccinated so you don’t have to wear a mask

  8. You have to wear a mask even if you’re vaccinated

  9. When the above rules change, and then change back, and then change back again, shut up about it or you’re a stupid MAGA-head

  10. Don’t forget to vote Democrat!

In a more serious vein, Claremont's Jeffrey H. Anderson posits that Faceless people make compliant subjects, not good citizens (thanks to Instapundit).

… rule by public health officials, under which we increasingly live today, encourages excessive risk-aversion and almost transforms cowardice into a virtue. … Human beings were meant to feel the sun and wind on their faces, not a (potentially moist) piece of fabric.

… All of this helps to answer the blithe question so frequently posed by mask enthusiasts: what’s the big deal? It is a very big deal. Masks hide from view the familiar faces, infectious smiles, and warm glances that bring light and color to everyday life. To dismiss this loss so cavalierly is to devalue human warmth and sociability in a remarkably callous way.

… In sum, not only do masks apparently not work as advertised, they are uncomfortable and unhygienic. They obscure our humanity and undermine our children’s development. They prevent us from seeing the emotions, sensibilities, and affections of others, or sharing our own. They limit communication and erode understanding. They profoundly compromise human interaction and substantially reduce our quality of life.

In the meantime, the Babylon Bee sees fit to bring us this gem of an editorial: To Convince The Unvaccinated, We Need To Scream At Them That They're Brainwashed Morons And We Hope They Die…

… how do you convince someone to go against a deeply held belief? It’s hard to say, but I know how I want to convince someone: screaming at them how dumb they are until they change their ways.

… If we are to save everyone from this pandemic, we have to find all the people who aren’t vaccinated and scream at them as loudly and as angrily as we can. Remember: The louder and angrier you are, the more right you sound and the more likely you are to convince people.

No longer America's "newspaper of record," the "New Woke Times" is now but a college campus paper, where kids like 1619 writer Nikole Hannah-Jones run the asylum and determine what news is fit to print

Echoing the Babylon Bee on the Victory Girls website, Deanna Fisher comes to the obvious conclusion: New York Times Officially Becomes College Newspaper.

In that perspective, remember the number of professional scholars and respected historians who were totally unaware about the Gray Lady's 1619 Project, and who were barely allowed to register much of their dissent in the newspaper since the liberals therein obviously knew better.

How relevant, indeed, is the 1619 Project, in the final analysis, when we learn what happened in the wake of a single op-ed in the "paper of record" by a single conservative? (See also: "Deeply Ashamed" of the… New York Times (!), An Oblivious Founder of the Error-Ridden 1619 Project Uses Words that Have to Be Seen to Be Believed)
One opinion editorial by Senator Tom Cotton was all it took to break the New York Times.

The senator from Arkansas wrote a piece, published last Wednesday, talked about using the military to restore order in American cities if the police were unable to do so. The sheer pants-wetting freakout by the STAFF of the New York Times, who exploded all over Twitter to whine and moan about Senator Cotton’s op-ed, led to first blame on the editor for “rushing” the piece, then “fact-checking” notes by the NYT added to the page (which contained neither facts nor checks, just an acknowledgement that an almighty temper tantrum was taking place behind the scenes), and now, the editor of the editorial page, James Bennet, has resigned. Whether Bennet resigned on his own, or told to resign, I leave up to you.

Well done, everyone. That surely made everything better, because goodness knows that multiple opinions about different topics are BAD THINGS. There is only ONE narrative, and people like 1619 writer Nikole Hannah-Jones are running the asylum now.

What has really happened? All those j-school college kids have moved into the real world. Fed on stories of Woodward and Bernstein and seeing journalism as a platform for “activism,” they have gone on from their college campus newspapers to real world newspapers. And instead of being shown the door when they had a complete hissy fit over words they didn’t like (after hearing and preaching that “speech is violence” all those years in college), publisher A.G. Sulzberger merely announces that James Bennet is out, and he is no more and no less than the academic advisor to the college newspaper formerly known as the New York Times. He has power because he writes the checks, and nothing more. There will be no bad grades. There will only be the pursuit of the woke, and those who are able to fall in line.

It’s also proof, once and for all, that a revolt on the part of the NEWS STAFF was able to change over the leadership of the EDITORIAL department – which means that there really is no dividing line between the two at all.

James Bennet, who is the brother of Colorado Senator (and former presidential candidate, not that anyone remembers) Michael Bennet, represents yet again that cozy, familial relationship between the press and politics (see the brothers Cuomo and the brothers Rhodes), and that still wasn’t enough to save him from being eaten alive by the new generation of “journalists” at the New York Times who see themselves as “activists” instead of reporters – and have killed their chosen profession.

How quickly they forget that the rules they enforce on others can so rapidly be used against them. Just wait for it. The next generation and iteration of “journalists” will someday come walking through the front door of the New York Times – which, by sheer legacy status and advertising dollars, will likely be the last of the print dinosaurs to actually die – and the group that is today celebrating James Bennet’s resignation will find that they are not “woke” enough for the group that comes after them. And Sulzberger will merely wave them away with their own resignations, unless his bottom line is affected. Because Sulzberger no longer runs a real newspaper. He runs a college campus paper, where the kids determine what news is fit to print.

The New York Times had a long run as the “paper of record.” Those days are officially done and over with. The pretense of the wall between news and opinion is finished. Welcome to the New Woke Times, where speech is violence unless it is pre-approved speech.

The Smug Liars' "Screw-You" Party

For four years, Joe Biden, along with all the members of his government and all his sympathizers in the Democratic Party, has been effectively saying one thing to the American people:

Screw you!

(In the first draft of this post, I used the F-bomb throughout, which is really more illustrative; but I decided to tone the voice down.)

Everything the Democrats have done has been Screw you! to the American people.

What have the Democrats done for anybody (whatever their race or sex) who was in the mainstream?

Nothing. (At least, I can think of nothing; please correct me if I am wrong…)

All they have done is coddle minorities, from drag queens to illegal aliens. Not fight for their rights, mind you, but coddle them.

T he Democrats hate you. They call you "domestic terrorists."

You deserve nothing but shame. You are deplorables, racists, fill-in-the-blank-phobes.

Prices have gone up, for groceries, for gas, for home purchase, for everything. (Thanks for the Instalink, professor; also you, Ed.)

For the past four yours, they have let the border wide open. Don't like rapists among their number? Don't like thieves? Don't like murderers? Don't like foreigners who have never learned to drive a car? Don't like Latin American Gangs? Don't like criminals (whether they are foreign-born or American-born)? Don't like terrorists? Don't like the products of cultures which do not value openness, honesty, and mutual respect? Or, in Don Surber's words, "invaders from countries that are immune to civilization"?

F*ck you, gaspole!

See if we care!

Once Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election in spectacular fashion, one might think that the Democrats (or that some Democrats) would gather and say, Okay, it appears rather conclusive that the American people does not want open borders and does not want lax laws for criminals (foreign or domestic). If not, one might at least think that there would be a couple of wise voices saying, Okay, hold your horses, let's lay low…

Instead of reassessing their agenda, the White House's wokesters double down, trying to make the transition as wokish and as leftist as possible, trying to get whole new batches of illegal aliens into the country, trying to sell pieces of Trump's Southern wall at 1% (!) of the price, and pardoning or commuting the sentences of all matters of vicious thugs and murderers. Those are the parting gifts of one Joe Biden.

No, the Drama Queens are still living in a World of Pure Fantasy, a World of Deserving Dreamers Vs. Despicable Deplorables. What this proves — in case you hadn't noticed — is that they have been blazingly lying about it, and about everything else, for the past four years.

Screw you!

Because if they are superior to you, and if they (therefore have reason to) hate you, if the only thing you deserve is to be shamed, well, then, they are entitled to lie to deplorables like you.

"Of course we are trying to solve the problem of the Southern border. No, we are not turning our schools into LGBTTQ+++ factories. The White House is in no way involved with the Lawfare against Donald Trump. Trump lost the 2020 election, and January 6 is the worst event since 9-11, since Pearl Harbor, and since the Civil War. Everybody in America — at least, those against the Left — is a racist. And the ghastly history of the country is one never-ending hideous series of oppression and genocide."

Don't like our lies?

Fuck you!

Fuck you, gaspole!

All this has led Stephen Kruiser to write that the Dems Make a Case for One-Party Republican Rule (at Least for a While). The transition has become so ridiculous, it led to a Babylon Bee tongue-in-cheeker titled Biden Desperately Searches For Anything Else He Can Screw Up In The Next 6 Days.

To date, Joe Biden has destroyed the American economy, overseen an invasion of illegal aliens, given Afghanistan terrorists advanced military weaponry and cost the lives of marines, facilitated Iran's funding of Hamas to conduct a terrorist attack on Israel and start a full-blown war in the Middle East, shut down the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to empower Russia and bring about the invasion of Ukraine, and had his dog bite two different people. But, according to the president, it's just not enough.

More seriously, over at Instapundit, Ed Driscoll writes that

Smugness is the left’s Kryptonite in the hands of Trump, but it’s such an ingrained part of their psyche that it may be impossible for them to ever change. QED:

Finding comfort in the notion that their former allies were disdainful, hapless rubes, smug liberals created a culture animated by that contempt. The result is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Ted Cruz: Joe Biden's Final 'Screw You' to a Majority of Americans

The Tony Kinnett Cast
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tx, joins the Tony Kinnett Cast to talk about the final days of the Biden administration and what unpopular policy changes President Biden is making before he leaves office, for good.

Update 2: Glenn Reynolds on Why the left keeps smearing its political rivals as Hitlers or Mussolinis

Want to be Hitler? You don’t have to hate Jews, invade Poland or grow a silly mustache. There’s only one thing you have to do: Win an election against the left, or even look like you might.

We’ve seen that for years, of course. Democrats have likened every GOP presidential candidate back to Tom Dewey to the Austrian corporal.

[In the past,] If you lost an election, that meant you weren’t doing what the people wanted. It was time to take stock, adjust your positions and try again next time while serving as the loyal opposition in the meantime.

Now any election the left loses is treated as an existential struggle, the equivalent of war. And all’s fair in war. Calling your opponents Nazis justifies whatever you want to do to them, and makes you the good guy when you do it.

Law Enforcement Officers and Police Shootings: Try Comparing Those of January 6 to Those in Minnesota

The MSM's Treatment of the January 6 Police Forces and of the Victims That Day

One aspect about the January 6 Protest that has not been popularized enough is the extent to which the claim that half a dozen policemen died that day turns out to be utterly preposterous.

Both Joe Biden and Hakeem Jeffries held speeches during the former's term in which the occupant of the White House and the House minority leader stated that five Capitol policemen were killed on January 6, 2021 and Hakeem Jeffries having family members solemnly come up and read the names of "the officers who are no longer with us."

But just think — the obvious questions arises: among all the protesters who were prosecuted (persecuted?) and jailed during the next four years, where were the murder cases? Why wasn't any of them charged with murder? Why has nobody seen any murder trials (five? more?)? Why do we know about all the members of the "mob" rioting at the Capitol but nothing about the people involved in the far worse problem of assassination? (Thanks for the Instalinks, Ed and Sarah.)

The Left cares nothing about individuals — see Mamdani — it always reverts to collectivism, in this case to collective guilt, such as the conservatives of the entire state of Texas all sharing the blame for the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas (whose killer, by the way, was a Soviet-admiring communist).

Ashli Babbitt's mother at CPAC in 2023
Had I been in the buildings on the days (no matter for which party, but let's say Republican) that Joe Biden and Hakeem Jeffries made their speeches, I would have stood up to say as follows

"We are firmly on the side of the Democrats in this matter. As you know, the GOP is known as the party of law and order and we Republicans have always stood firmly behind the boys in blue. We want to help in any way we can and we should like, therefore, to have the exact names of the policemen martyred and (as far as possible) the exact times of the afternoon of January 6 in which they were killed, as well as the videos thereof. Most of all, we demand the name of the killer(s) of each of these five men, in order to prosecute these murderers to the full extent of the law. Indeed, we are determined to demand the death penalty in every case."

Of course, while we know the names of the five law officers who are dead, nobody can determine at what time they died on January 6 or who killed them on January 6, for the obvious reason that not a single one of them died on January 6 or was murdered on January 6 or on any other day.

Some of them died weeks, if not months, later, and all died of unrelated causes (the one who died earliest, Officer Brian Sicknick, was from two strokes the following day). (Of course you could claim that the suicides of Howard Liebengood, Jeffrey Smith, Kyle DeFreytag, and Gunther Hashida was caused by depression due to the January 6 riot, in which case some of us will ungraciously retort that such a person should perhaps not have belonged in the police business in the first place.)

Meanwhile, not a tear is shed by the Left for Ashli Babbitt, whose name indeed is dragged through the mud and whose death is deemed to be nothing but her own fault — if not outright mocked — by leftists galore. (See also Charlie Kirk, Andrew Breitbart, etc, etc, etc…)

Intermission: The Reader's Digest's Hard Turn to Wokeness

In a passage from a book authored by "one of Reader’s Digest International Edition’s top reporters" — which shows how far left even that monthly has gone (a 10-page summary of the book was published in the November 2002 issue, just in time to influence the mid-terms of that year) — that is hardly believable, Anita Bartholomew proves that The Digest has gone full woke.

(NOTE: If you have no time for this lengthy "intermission", skip to the below the picture of the Minneapolis riots in the snow…)

Guess whose name is not mentioned anywhere in Anita Bartholomew's Drama in Real Life article about the "Siege at the Capitol": Ashli Babbitt's. Nowhere is Rosanne Boyland mentioned. They are mentioned in her book, Siege: An American Tragedy, but with such a different tone of voice than that for the brave policemen besieged by "the MAGA horde’s storming of the building" that is so eye-popping it sounds like a Babylon Bee satire.

Listen to how Ashli Babbitt is described: because she was a soldier (who ever thought, in their wildest dreams, that The Reader's Digest would come down to dissing the… United States Army?!), "most of Ashli Babbitt's adult life was training and preparation to do violence"! (How is that for an upgrade from "thank you for your service"?! What about, uh, the training and preparation of the main subject of your partisan article, then, Anita Bartholomew, i.e. … police officers?!) But it gets better (sic) — in her book, the author gives outright praise for the killing of Ashli Babbitt.

"Had a Capitol Police officer not thwarted [the violent mob's] pursuit [of escaping congressional representatives] by shooting Ashli Babbitt, how many lawmakers would they have taken down?" Isn't "taken down" a weasel word for killed — oh, but Anita didn't use the word killed!

Turn to Jack Cashill, the author of Ashli: The Untold Story of the Women of January 6 (The real question is not why thousands of women went to Washington on January 6; The real question is why the rest of us did not), to set the record straight:

No police officers were killed or seriously injured. No members of Congress or staff were molested.

As for Rosanne Boyland, Jack Cashill addresses her case in an American Thinker article called The ‘Through Line’ from Ashli Babbitt to Donald Trump:

[Michael] Byrd was not the only cop to panic. Metropolitan Police Department officer Lila Morris beat the unconscious Rosanne Boyland repeatedly over the head with a stick. Boyland subsequently died.

But in Anita Bartholomew's book (neither Michael Byrd nor Lila Morris are mentioned in its 220 pages), Rosanne Boyland turns out to be nothing but a drug addict who "was being trampled" (by whom is, again, never clarified, but please do notice the passive voice which, beyond being passive, suggests that the protestors were, or at least may have been, responsible).

Never in my day as a fact-checker at the Reader's Digest, where I started my career, would an editor have let such a text pass, either in the book form or in the article. In my day, the article (not to mention the book) would have received a suggestion for a total "rewrite" or an outright "drop."

One question Anita Bartholomew never bothers with: What is Donald Trump's view (not to mention that of his supporters, i.e., half the country) of the 2021 "riot", or more importantly, of Trump's view of the 2020 election. However, Jack Cashill makes some good points regarding the race-baiting and defaming Democrats' scare-mongering, "toxic nonsense", and "mass psychosis":

If … Michael Byrd thought he “saved countless lives” by killing Ashli Babbitt, [Thomas Crooks] may well have thought he’d save millions [in July 2024] by killing that Hitler-loving white supremacist Donald Trump.

Moreover, there is no acknowledgemt in Anita Bartholomew's article that already by August 2021, the FBI was confirming that there had not been an insurrection some seven months earlier. Did it make it into the book? From the looks of it — an author who seems as objective as Nancy Pelosi — the answer is an unqualified No.

In her outstanding book, La Guerre Culturelle, Évelyne Joslain points out (with an ever-so-pertinent rhyme in French) that "Le Siège du Capitole" i.e., is really "Le Piège du Capitole", i.e., what the left calls the "Siege at the Capitol" is really the Trap at the Capitol, in other words, entrapment at the Capitol.

Notice Anything Different About the Left's Descriptions of the Minnesota Riots?

Which brings us to the current uprisings in Minnesota (in which we are repeatedly assured by the "mostly peaceful protests" crowd that they are neither riots nor an insurrection).

Renée Good is described as nothing but a mother bringing her kid to school that day, while nobody in the MSM seems to mention that she had parked her car perpendicular in the middle of the road. Or that indeed when asked to step out of the car, she immediately hit Reverse, before lounging forward.

Think for a moment about a common traffic stop, say for speeding, whether in America, in France, in Denmark, in Greenland, in China, or anywhere else — would any policeman look at you with gentle eyes if you parked your vehicle perpendicular across the road? How about if you ignored his order to exit the car, instead setting in reverse only to bound forward?

Good's intention may not have been to hit any of the law officers, but it seems straight-out denial of reality to dismiss the bodycam of Jonathan Ross which shows him being hit, or shoved if you prefer, while the ICE agent has since been described as being in hospital suffering from internal bleeding. You think that may be exaggerated? Maybe, but: how is that different to what the Left is doing with the Left's alleged victims?

Conversely, indeed, nobody seems to be worried about the health and well-being of the many thousands of law enforcement officers in Minnesota these days.

Which, needless to say, seems to be par for the course when you keep describing that police force as fascistic and the Gestapo.

Related: • RIP Charlie Kirk — This Is What Is Bound to Happen When You Constantly Refer to Your Adversaries as "Fascists" and as "Threats to Democracy"

By the way, I can assure you that no member of the Gestapo, whether in an occupied country or in Germany proper, ever had to deal with thrown snowballs, deafened with whistles, and treated to a barrage of car honks. They didn't need to cover their faces, either, for the simple reason that nobody in their right mind was out in the streets getting in the faces and organizing to doxx the families of these truly fascist people. No-one was resisting — openly — not if they wanted to live. "If you protest, and you don't expect anything to happen to you," as the meme puts it, "then you never truly believed we were living under fascism."

Question: How is what Ashli Babbitt did — jump through a broken window — any wors than what Renée Good did? Is a car not, can an automobile not be, a weapon?

• Ashli Babbitt and the left's first consequence-free taste of MAGA blood: Openly calling the Orcs to man the barricades, the Left's revolutionary cosplay is headlonging into homicidal politics

How about Alex Pretti?

As PJ Media's MATT MARGOLIS points out (in The Left Doesn’t Want You to Know This About Alex Pretti, the Man the Border Patrol Shot),

The talking points are already circulating. Social media posts from the left keep hammering on Pretti's job as an ICU nurse, as if that somehow proves he was there with pure intentions. They are gaslighting you because they want you to believe federal agents gunned down a selfless healthcare worker for no reason.

That is not the case.

We already knew that Pretti was carrying a loaded handgun and two extra loaded magazines when he showed up at an active ICE operation targeting a violent criminal illegal immigrant. And like Good before him, Pretti wasn't some random citizen. He was part of an organized network dedicated to interfering with immigration enforcement.

And he brought a loaded gun.

… Speaking on behalf of neighbors, [Jeanne] Massey says the community is "horrified" and "furious" about Pretti's killing. "Let me be clear: we are horrified, we are furious, and we are not going to pretend this is anything but what it is - another senseless act of violence carried out by federal agents in our city," she said.

What Massey conveniently leaves out is what Pretti was doing there in the first place. He showed up at an active federal law enforcement operation carrying a loaded weapon and extra ammunition. Video footage shows Border Patrol agents attempting to disarm him before the fatal shooting.

… The left wants you to see this as federal overreach. The reality is that these networks have created a dangerous environment in which activists deliberately interfere with law enforcement operations. They track agents around the clock, follow them, confront them, and apparently sometimes show up armed. Then they act shocked when agents act in self-defense and things turn deadly.

Meanwhile — to restate the obvious — the protestors of January 6 did not bring any firearms to the protest. sometimes, we are told (with the utmost passion) that no no no no, this was not the case: "Oh yes, one of them did bring a gun! It was in the trunk of his car! Parked two miles away."

That's like saying that one of the peasants who attacked la Bastille in 1789 had every intention of murder; Indeed, Jacques owned a pitchfork. Oui, Monsieur! Yessir, he did. Jacques had a pitchfork in the haystack in his farm in Normandy.

In his debunking of the Left's fairy tale of the January 6 melodrama, Factcheck 's  examines all the charges against the protestors:

The mob of Trump supporters protesting his 2020 election loss brutally attacked officers with many types of weapons, including flag poles, pipes, bats, bricks and pepper spray, a bipartisan Senate report said.

But why use pepper spray? Why use a flagpole? Why not simply bring a firearm? Especially when you — proudly — belong to the most gun-owning group of people on the planet?

But guns are what a lot of leftist protesters are bringing to the streets of Minneapolis — along with, believe it or not, bombing materials.

This forces PJ Media's ERIC FLORACK to ask, How Is This Not an Insurrection?

… rule number one here seems a purely logical point. It's one that seems to be getting ignored by many: You simply do not pull a loaded gun on a federal officer doing his duty enforcing the law and expect to survive.

When anybody brings up Renée Good and Alex Pretti in the future, don't hesitate to retort with Ashli Babbitt and Charlie Kirk. There is no more fitting description of their double standards.

The Real Reason Why Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, and the Land O'Lakes Maid Must Vanish

Do you know the true reason that Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben and Mrs. Butterworth have to be purged, along with the likes of Uncle Remus and Uncle Tom?

Because they are smiling and displaying happy faces and clearly happy.

For the left, the only good "Negro" is the "Negro" who is enraged, who is on edge, and (last but not least) who votes for the Democratic Party. They must hate their country for all the injustices, real or alleged, that they (or that their ancestors) have suffered, and be in the legions working for the Social Justice Warriors' "fundamental transformation of the United States of America." Seething with rage and resentment, the only good "Negro" is the "Negro" who is part of the SJWs' Permanent Outrage Machine.

As Walter Williams wrote in The Jackson Sun,
The news media people and their liberal allies know the facts, but they need to promote the appearance of injustice to keep black people in a state of grievance.
This is why Martin Luther King and Frederick Douglas are absent from the 1619 Project. Not only did they see America as fundamentally good, they acted in a pretty reasonable manner most of the time and they were more than willing to work with white people. Meanwhile, Tim Scott, the epitome of a black man who rose from poverty to prominence, did not even receive an invitation to participate in the 50th anniversary commemorations of MLK's Lincoln Memorial speech. (Incidentally — not really — all three happen(ed) also to be Republicans.)
• Related: Witness the Unbelievable Amount of Racism That Exists Among Conservatives and in the Tea Party

So what is wrong about Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben and Uncle Remus and the Land O'Lakes maid isn't that they are caricatures — or that their “history and storyline are steeped in extremely problematic and stereotypical racist tropes from” the 1940s, the 1930s, the 1900s, or earlier — but that they are blacks who aren't in a state of grievance and outrage.

As Dennis Prager writes repeatedly, the trademark of the Left is the absence of even the minutest sign of gratitude in their lives. Uncle Ben, Uncle Tom, and Uncle Remus display signs of gratitude as well as of happiness and, indeed, basic human goodness, and, for the left, that is a no-no (in fact, t'is an outrage).

Certainly, nobody is advocating that anybody, black or white, ignore the injustices against themselves or others, past or present. But in their depictions, Ben and Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth are not appearing in public. Is it impossible to imagine that, no matter how they behaved in public during the day and no matter how many injustices they may have encountered (and perhaps protested against), in the privacy of their homes, Ben and Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth let down their masks, cool down, smile, and relax as they prepare dinner for their families with rice and pancakes?

The Hill's Marty Johnson:

Mars and Conagra announced that they would be changing the logos of Uncle Ben's rice and Mrs. Butterworth's syrup, respectively."The Mrs. Butterworth's brand, including its syrup packaging, is intended to evoke the images of a loving grandmother. We stand in solidarity with our Black and Brown communities and we can see that our packaging may be interpreted in a way that is wholly inconsistent with our values."
What does all this really say? It says that minorities must be treated like children (presumably, because they are like children) and coddled.

The movement turns out to more a white thing more than anything.

When Native Americans were asked about changing the name of the Redskins football team, fewer than 10 % felt offended by the term. (And why should they? Why, indeed, should they feel anything but pride? When one names a sports team of pride, one chooses a name that respect. For instance, no place anywhere would anybody call their sports team the  N•••ers (the N-word), or, conversely, the Crackers; but they might call them the Zulus, or the Ashantis, or the Persians (conversely, the Spartans or the Vikings or the Saxons), to depict a warrior people, or a warrior tribe, which has shown, and is celebrated for, its warrior skills.)

In a short online video from Prager University, a white student walks through a California campus dressed in traditional Chinese attire and gets excoriated and yelled at again and again for being (dressed like) a racist. In the second half of the video, he walks up to Asians (and Asian-Americans?) in the street and, finally, through Chinatown. There, he meets nothing but merriment. At worst, he gets a "You should watch out because it might be interpreted as racist", i.e., others, that is to say whites, might call it racist.

As for the families of Lillian Richard (who served as a model for the Aunt Jemima character), they are opposed to the rebranding move. This led the Babylon Bee to run a tongue-in-cheek article entitled Activists Fight Racism By Driving All People Of Color Out Of Pop Culture.

In the case of the
black chef on the boxes of Cream Of Wheat [his] is an image of a real person, too. The late Frank L. White was a chef in Chicago. In 1900, his picture replaced the breakfast cereal's previous mascot — "Rastus," a racial slur for a black man.
So, in other words, the company reacted to racial stereotypes back 120 years ago, and reacted, appropriately, one could say, by — can you believe it?! — replacing a stereotype with a real person.

Indeed, all these characters turn out to be not stereotypes at all but real people. With regards to the Land O'Lakes maiden, Mia was never a stereotype, affirms the Native American (!) son of the Ojibwe artist who drew her originally.

Likewise the slave invited by Honest Abe to shed his chains and rise in the Emancipation Memorial, criticized for being a stereotype, happens to also be based upon a real person, as described by Ken Masugi at the American Greatness website in his article Lincoln's New Assassins:
Now the mob takes the role of John Wilkes Booth in removing perhaps the greatest of all Lincoln sculptures, the Emancipation Memorial in Lincoln Park, located in northeast Washington, D.C. The preeminent Lincoln scholar of our or any other time, Harry V. Jaffa, said many times that this sculpture, originally referred to as the Freedman’s Memorial, rivaled Daniel French’s Lincoln Memorial creation. The statue was dedicated to honor Lincoln on the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Yet the furious mob blindly objects that the statue shows a kneeling slave before a standing Lincoln. The mob is even more blinkered in its art appreciation than it is in its historical understanding, as I will show in close-up views of the muscular freedman—no longer a slave!—and other details.

… the Commission charged with coming up with an appropriate memorial and raising funds from freed slaves—yes, the mob would be desecrating the memories, labor, and donations of enslaved Americans [!]
If an Italian, a Frenchman, a Cambodian, or a Nigerian were to dress up as, say, a Viking, why should I feel offended? Why should I care?

But you don't understand, I am told that the SJW actions are frightfully important because they "help play an important role in eliminating racial bias."

Except, the truth is, as we have seen, few minorities actually give much of a spit.

When René Goscinny was criticized for his depictions of blacks in the Asterix and Lucky Luke comics, the man who lost half his family in the ovens of Auschwitz reacted with anger at being called a racist.
And the whites in my comics?! Have you taken a look at them, the whites in my comics?!
How about the happy Fenians, who saunter through the Irish countryside for the benefit of a soap brand? ("Tip o' the mornin', lassie!") Should they vanish too? Who are we supposed to replace all these people with? On edge gangster types from the Hood, from the Indian reservation, and from Dublin's slums — growling and gnarling, with a scowl on their face? (I suppose they could, they should, all be saying, something  to the effect of "Buy my maple syrup, you dirty cracker, or you're a goddamned racist!")

I have often summarized the Left's positions thus: it's all about private lives (race, sex, etc), not public policy, and demonstrating that you are better than your neighbor.

In an unbelievable moment with Donald Trump's press secretary, a (white) journalist asked whether, for the benefit of blacks, the president shouldn't push for Juneteenth to be made a federal holiday.

What's wrong with Martin Luther King day? We need another federal holiday, based on a freeing of slaves which took place in only one of the 13 or so slave states (Texas)?

More importantly: Don't Americans today know that Juneteenth would never have been possible if not for the likes of Abraham Lincoln. Ulysses Simpson Grant, and Colonel Hans Christian Heg?

Well, all over America the statues of those Americans have been defaced and torn down.  Perhaps, before you make more for more plans for another holiday, you should refrain from acting like a spoiled brat (whatever the color of your skin) and tearing down the statues of those who took up arms, put their lives at risk, and lost said lives against the slave power and secession.

The SJW movement is right about one thing, though. There is not much of anything that I want to to do for blacks. Do you know why? Because I think that blacks are grown-up citizens who are able to get by — and to thrive — without help from me.

So who is the true racist here? The conservative who does not want to help (or not to help excessively) because he considers blacks as equals who? Or the person or the leftist (whatever the color of his skin) who goes "Awwww, poor l'il black people. It's so outrageous, it's so sad… Poor N•groes who cannot get by without help from the government and from leftists like me…"?

• The Departure of Bari Weiss: "Propagandists", Ethical Collapse, and the "New McCarthyism" — "The radical left are running" the New York Times, "and no dissent is tolerated"

• "Full of left-wing sophomoric drivel": The New York Times — already drowning in a fantasy-land of alternately running pro-Soviet Union apologia and their anti-American founding “1619 Project” series — promises to narrow what they view as acceptable opinion even more

• "Deeply Ashamed" of the… New York Times (!),  An Oblivious Founder of the Error-Ridden 1619 Project Uses Words that Have to Be Seen to Be Believed ("We as a News Organization Should Not Be Running Something That Is Offering Misinformation to the Public, Unchecked")

• Allen C Guelzo: The New York Times offers bitterness, fragility, and intellectual corruption—The 1619 Project is not history; it is conspiracy theory

• The 1619 Project is an exercise in religious indoctrination: Ignoring, downplaying, or rewriting the history of 1861 to 1865, the Left and the NYT must minimize, downplay, or ignore the deaths of 620,000 Americans

• 1619: It takes an absurdly blind fanaticism to insist that today’s free and prosperous America is rotten and institutionally oppressive

• The MSM newsrooms and their public shaming terror campaigns — the "bullying campus Marxism" is closer to cult religion than politics: Unceasingly searching out thoughtcrime, the American left has lost its mind

• Fake But Accurate: The People Behind the NYT's 1619 Project Make a "Small" Clarification, But Only Begrudgingly and Half-Heartedly, Because Said Mistake Actually Undermines The 1619 Project's Entire Premise

THE REVOLUTION OF THE 1770s

• The Collapse of the Fourth Estate by Peter Wood: No one has been able to identify a single leader, soldier, or supporter of the Revolution who wanted to protect his right to hold slaves (A declaration that slavery is the founding institution of America and the center of everything important in our history is a ground-breaking claim, of the same type as claims that America condones rape culture, that 9/11 was an inside job, that vaccinations cause autism, that the Moon landing was a hoax, or that ancient astronauts built the pyramids)

• Mary Beth Norton:  In 1774, a year before Dunmore's proclamation, Americans had already in fact become independent

• Most of the founders, including Thomas Jefferson, opposed slavery’s continued existence, writes Rick Atkinson, despite the fact that many of them owned slaves

• Leslie Harris: Far from being fought to preserve slavery, the Revolutionary War became a primary disrupter of slavery in the North American Colonies (even the NYT's fact-checker on the 1619 Project disagrees with its "conclusions": "It took 60 more years for the British government to finally end slavery in its Caribbean colonies")

• Sean Wilentz on 1619: the movement in London to abolish the slave trade formed only in 1787, largely inspired by… American (!) antislavery opinion that had arisen in the 1760s and 1770s

• 1619 & Slavery's Fatal Lie: it is more accurate to say that what makes America unique isn't slavery but the effort to abolish it

• 1619 & 1772: Most of the founders, including Jefferson, opposed slavery’s continued existence, despite many of them owning slaves; And Britain would remain the world's foremost slave-trading nation into the nineteenth century

• Wilfred Reilly on 1619: Slavery was legal in Britain in 1776, and it remained so in all overseas British colonies until 1833

• Not 1619 but 1641: In Fact, the American Revolution of 1776 Sought to Avoid the Excesses of the English Revolution Over a Century Earlier

• James Oakes on 1619: "Slavery made the slaveholders rich; But it made the South poor; And it didn’t make the North rich — So the legacy of slavery is poverty, not wealth"

• One of the steps of defeating truth is to destroy evidence of the truth, says Bob Woodson; Because the North's Civil War statues — as well as American history itself — are evidence of America's redemption from slavery, it's important for the Left to remove evidence of the truth

TEACHING GENERATIONS OF KIDS FALSEHOODS ABOUT THE U.S.

• 1619: No wonder this place is crawling with young socialists and America-haters — the utter failure of the U.S. educational system to teach the history of America’s founding

• 1619: Invariably Taking the Progressive Side — The Ratio of Democratic to Republican Voter Registration in History Departments is More than 33 to 1

• Denying the grandeur of the nation’s founding—Wilfred McClay on 1619: "Most of my students are shocked to learn that that slavery is not uniquely American"

• Inciting Hate Already in Kindergarten: 1619 "Education" Is Part of Far-Left Indoctrination by People Who Hate America to Kids in College, in School, and Even in Elementary Classes

• "Distortions, half-truths, and outright falsehoods": Where does the 1619 project state that Africans themselves were central players in the slave trade? That's right: Nowhere

• John Podhoretz on 1619: the idea of reducing US history to the fact that some people owned slaves is a reductio ad absurdum and the definition of bad faith

• The 1619 Africans in Virginia were not ‘enslaved’, a black historian points out; they were indentured servants — just like the majority of European whites were

• "Two thirds of the people, white as well as black, who crossed the Atlantic in the first 200 years are indentured servants" notes Dolores Janiewski; "The poor people, black and white, share common interests"

LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

• Wondering Why Slavery Persisted for Almost 75 Years After the Founding of the USA? According to Lincoln, the Democrat Party's "Principled" Opposition to "Hate Speech"

• Victoria Bynum on 1619 and a NYT writer's "ignorance of history": "As dehumanizing and brutal as slavery was, the institution was not a giant concentration camp"

• Dennis Prager: The Left Couldn't Care Less About Blacks

• When was the last time protests in America were marred by police violence? 1970, according to Ann Coulter, who asks "Can we restrict wild generalizations about the police to things that have happened in our lifetimes?" (Compare with, say, China…)
