I have already said on BFMTV that few fascists ever, few Nazis ever gave the fascist/Nazi salute from the heart, as Elon Musk did. Whether in Italy, in Spain, in Portugal, or in Germany, the arm went straight up from the side as the individual is standing still. Aye, there is the rub: the salute is traditionally formal, given as a soldier standing still by an "inferior" to a "superior" at the outset of an event or only when asked (when commanded) to do so.
Thus we see lines of Nazis, in uniform or civilian attire, all doing the Führergruß together, mechanically, at exactly the same time; the fact that nobody in the audience returned, or even recognized, Musk's salute, much less thought of returning it, is also evidence of elevated Drama Queenery. It is not a salute the "superior" gives to his "inferiors" (except as a return), certainly not informally in the middle of a speech, emotional or otherwise, as he (or she) prances about from one side of the stage to the next.

The Roman salute takes on a radically new dimension with its appropriation by Italian fascism and German Nazism in the 20th century. Benito Mussolini, eager to reestablish a symbolic continuity between contemporary Italy and imperial Rome, integrates this gesture into the public rituals of his regime. This salute, associated with order, discipline and obedience, becomes a central propaganda tool to cement national unity and magnify the figure of il Duce.
In Germany, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party adopt and adapt this gesture, which becomes the “Heil Hitler.” The common point between these two salutes, Nazi and Fascist, lies in the plane of the expression of the gesture: in both cases, the posture of the right arm is stretched forward, in a rigid extension, fingers tightened and rigid (similar signifiers).
However, note this difference. While Mussolini and his supporters claim a symbolic continuity with Roman grandeur, making the salute a mark of their martial ideology and their project of rebuilding an empire, Hitler re-contextualizes it in a mythology that he wants to be Germanic above all. The latter would sometimes attribute this Germanic origin to the salute, claiming that it represented an ancient gesture of peace, although this justification is historically unfounded and more a tool of propaganda than truth.
In Italy, the Fascist salute is integrated into almost all aspects of public and private life, to the point of replacing the handshake as an official form of greeting, even in civilian clothes. The Nazi salute, for its part, is associated with the cult of Hitler's personality. The Führergruß is often modified according to circumstances.
Of course, the very word fascism comes also from a Roman word, i.e., fasces, which means/meant strength in unity.
