What Other Countries Have Persecuted and Prosecuted Opposition Leaders?

After the Trump verdict, Peter Aitken of Fox News asks, Who else is on the list of infamous countries that prosecuted opposition leaders?

(See also: Who Else, Besides Donald Trump, Is a Convicted Felon?)

Donald Trump joins a growing list of world leaders convicted after leaving office, with many critics in the U.S. claiming that such measures hurt the country’s image as a global leader.

… Here are some other countries where opposition leaders or candidates have faced prosecution, sometimes even ahead of elections.

RUSSIA

No case in modern politics of opposition suppression stands as notorious as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing saga to keep his chief political rival Alexei Navalny out of office: Russian courts determined Navalny had violated probationary terms by leaving the country, during which time he suffered an attempt on his life while in Germany.

The Russian court ultimately convicted Navalny on charges of extremism and sentenced him to 19 years in prison, where he ultimately died due to brutal conditions during his confinement. …

HONG KONG

Trump’s verdict overshadowed news out of Hong Kong that 14 opposition figures had been convicted of "conspiring to subvert state power," drawing condemnation from watchdog groups such as Amnesty International, who called the decision "unprecedented" and "the most ruthless illustration yet of how Hong Kong’s National Security Law is weaponized to silence dissent."

Former lawmakers Leung Kwok-hung, Lam Cheuk-ting, Helena Wong and Raymond Chan are among the dozen defendants who could face life in prison when sentenced later this year, ABC News reported. …

INDIA

Critics have accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the courts to prevent his main political rival Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of the capital Dehli, from running and campaigning for the upcoming elections. …

BRAZIL

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won re-election in 2022 after leaving prison due to the country’s Supreme Court nullifying his conviction on money laundering and corruption charges, citing serious biases in the case against him.

Lula, arrested as part of "Operation Car Wash," allegedly had traded favors with a construction company in exchange for the promise of a beachfront apartment. His arrest and conviction deeply divided Brazil and led to heated legal back-and-forth over the following years.

Fox News gets it totally wrong here: the only official being prosecuted is Lula's opponent, Jair Bolsonaro — the president who has been hounded ever since he claimed that Lula's socialists "won" the 2022 election only through voter fraud. (Obrigado to Sarah Hoyt.)

VENEZUELA

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has seen a number of his opponents jailed for various crimes, with opposition leader Nelson Pinero of the center-right Encuentro Ciudadano party recently jailed on charges of incitement to hatred, El País reported

The Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) allegedly entered Pinero’s house without a search warrant. Another politician, presidential candidate Delsa Solorzano, denounced the arrest, saying that "Nelson is one more political prisoner of this dictatorship, which has taken 300 citizens to jail for thinking differently." …

CAMBODIA

Kem Sokha, the Cambodian opposition leader, was convicted of treason and sentenced to 27 years in jail. He appealed his charges, which Amnesty International condemned as "baseless" and urged the country’s authorities to "end their ongoing crackdown against opposition groups."

As I wrote in irony last August:

In conclusion, can't we say that Americans are lucky?

America has finally figured out that people in the West were wrong to demand that the Soviet Union, Communist China, and like régimes should imitate the United States. Instead, the USA should try to become more like a banana republic such as China, Cuba, or Venezuela. …

Who Else, Besides Donald Trump, Is a Convicted Felon?

So Donald Trump is now a convicted felon?

News item:

Sakharov was a convicted felon.
Solzhenitsyn was a convicted felon.
Vaclav Havel was a convicted felon.
Martin Luther King was a convicted felon.
And Nelson Mandela was a convicted felon.

You might as well tell us that Sakharov's fate proves that Leonid Brezhnev was a far more upstanding citizen than was the USSR's "Domestic Enemy Number One." You might as well say that Mandela's 18 years in Robben Island jail cell proves the utter decency of, and the national need for, South Africa's apartheid government.

One bitter X tweet I read yesterday states bitterly that Trump is "still going to stir [shit emoji] up left and right, as loudly and unabashedly as possible.

News item # 2: living under a communist régime or an apartheid dictatorship gives you the right — nay, gives you the duty — to "stir [shit emoji] up left and right, as loudly and unabashedly as possible." (Thanks for the Instalink, Sarah)

Is it accurate to claim, as does the New York Times, that the "president's conviction in an New York criminal trail [reveals], yet again, why he is unfit for office"?

Or is it more accurate to say that the eight-year-long armada of impeachments, investigations, and court cases suggests that the Democrats are turning the United States into a banana republic, complete with kangaroo courts engaging in show trials, in order to "fundamentally transform" the country into a one-party state?

For 16 years, on every June 6, the D-Day anniversary was commemorated at No Pasarán — in addition to a link to my (oft-praised) "story of D-Day" — by one line from Paul Anka's thrilling score from the film The Longest Day, one of the best war movies (and simply one of the best movies) ever made.

For those who might be interested, below are the lyrics sung by Mitch Miller and the Gang, the commemorations, and the hyperlinks from 2007 to 2022:

The first three commemorations were simply the title and a link to the story of D-Day; by 2010, I was adding photos, cartoons, and/or various links to the posts…

Many men came here as soldiers
Many men will pass this way
Many men will count the hours
As they live the longest day

Many men are tired and weary
Many men are here to stay
Many men won't see the sun set
When it ends the longest day

The longest day, the longest day
This will be the longest day
Filled with hopes and filled with fears
Filled with blood and sweat and tears

Many men, the mighty thousands (75th anniversary edition)
Many men to victory
Marching on, right into battle
In the longest day in history

Gaza: The Left cares about dead black people, whether in America or in Africa, only when they are killed by whites

With The Genocide Libel Is the Blood Libel of Our Time, you can count on Dennis Prager to get to the bottom of the issue.

The author of the Rational Bible series even manages to explain why the original blood libel is necessarily false:

In medieval Europe, Christians who hated Jews spread the lie that Jews kidnap Christian children, slaughter them, and use their blood to bake matzos for Passover. This lie became known as "the Blood Libel," probably the greatest libel in history. Over the course of many centuries, Jews were tortured and murdered, often by being burned alive, because of the Blood Libel.

The Blood Libel was particularly odious in light of two facts: It was the Jews who, through their Bible, first outlawed human sacrifice; and one of the first laws in the Hebrew Bible is a ban on consuming blood.

Dennis Prager goes on to take on the current blood libel:

For centuries, Jews had to confront the fact that all around them, throughout Europe, a vast number of people believed an enormous lie about them. Jews have to confront the same thing today. We are now living through the Second Blood Libel: the claim that the Jewish state is committing genocide. But, unlike the Blood Libel, this libel is not the product of Christians; it is the product of Muslims and the Left. The very people against whom the greatest genocide in recorded history -- the Holocaust -- was directed are now accused of that crime.

According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, in 1948, there were 1,380,000 Palestinians in Israel and the greater Palestine area, and as of 2022, there were 7 million. In other words, there are now five times as many Palestinians in the Palestinian territories and in Israel as there were in 1948.

… given these figures, even leftists would be forced to acknowledge that Israel has never had the slightest inclination to perpetrate genocide against the Palestinians. People targeted for genocide do not increase their numbers -- let alone by a factor of five.

What the Left and their Muslim allies claim is that since Oct. 7, Israel has presumably changed its mind and decided to commit genocide against Palestinians (though, apparently, only in Gaza, not in the West Bank).

Here are some facts that explain why the charge of "Israeli genocide" is as much a lie as was the Blood Libel:

First, as Israeli officials have repeatedly stated, if Hamas released the hostages and surrendered, Israel would cease its bombing of Gaza. That was precisely the condition that the United States and its allies offered Japan and Germany: Unconditionally surrender, and the bombing of Japanese and German cities will immediately cease.

Second, World War II brings us to more proof that the charge of Israeli genocide is a lie. No one ever accused America or Britain of committing genocide against Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan. Even those who now maintain that the Allied bombing of Dresden and other German cities was morally wrong do not accuse the United States or Britain of having committed genocide. So why is Israel so charged?

Third, during World War II, it was almost universally understood that every German death by the Allies was caused by the Nazi regime, and every Japanese death was caused by the Japanese fascist regime. Had there been no Nazi invasions of European countries and no Japanese bombing of the United States and invasions of myriad Asian countries, there would have been no World War II and therefore no bombing of German and Japanese cities. Likewise, if there were no Hamas and no Oct. 7, there would be no Israeli bombing of Gaza. Every dead Palestinian in Gaza is the result of Hamas' actions.

Fourth, Hamas is responsible for every dead Gazan for another reason: Hamas uses Gazan civilians as human shields.

Fifth, despite far larger mass killings around the world, only Israel is widely charged with genocide.

Since the beginning of this century, the Islamic terror group Boko Haram has murdered more than 60,000 Christians in Nigeria. Not only have there been no left-wing protests, few people even know, let alone care, about it. The Left doesn't care because the perpetrators have been Islamists -- their allies in the fight against the West -- and blacks. The Left cares about dead black people, whether in America or in Africa, only when they are killed by whites.

Same thing with Arabs and/or Muslims: Arabs killed by other Arabs (often the citizens' own governments) or Muslims killed by other Muslims generates zero outrage (even among Arabs and Muslims) and, indeed, zero interest.

In that perspective, notice that Libs Want Dennis Prager's Townhall, along with PJ Media, among (numerous) other media outlets, Charged Under 'Genocide Convention' for daring to Report the Truth About Israel and Hamas.

Sixth, the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has just revised its child fatality figure in the Gaza war sharply downward. On May 6, it reported more than 14,500 deaths; two days later, it reported 7,797. OCHA also revised downward its figure for women fatalities from more than 9,500 to 4,959. In other words, all the mainstream Western media have reported as truth the lies Hamas announced about the numbers of Gazan women and children killed by Israeli bombs. (However, even the original false figures don't come close to substantiating the genocide charge.)

… Even if the media give these new numbers the attention it has given the alleged "genocide," it will not end a single anti-Israel demonstration or cause one Israel-hater to cease accusing Israel of genocide. Since the accusation was never based on truth, truth will not end it.

The only genocide in the Israel-Palestinian war is the one Hamas and Iran seek to perpetrate against the Jews of Israel.

The Real Reason for Secularism: For the Left, the Golden Rule and the 10 Commandments turn out to be a major problem

Over at Instapundit, Sarah Hoyt links to a trifecta of posts on secularism — as well as to her own outstanding In Praise of Populism — to wit, they are Keith Lowery's The Myth of Secular Neutrality, Holly MathNerd's The Disappearance of Secularism, and Francis Turner's Faith and Ritual.

Before we get to the gist of this post (the point here is not to quote all of these remarkable posts, although I would love to), I will do a quick quote from Keith Lowery's article:

The point is to psychologically condition Americans until they believe that they cannot afford to exercise their civil rights. From Jack Phillips to Donald Trump, the law-fare being run by progressives is less about winning those cases than about publicizing the cases so that other non-progressives will think twice before exercising their own civil rights, or doing anything that has a practical political impact that is negative for progressives.

… So the cost of exercising any actual civil rights, those which run afoul of progressive goals, is being intentionally inflated beyond all affordability. Progressives know exactly what they are doing.

The radical partisanship of the government bureaucracy, brazenly on display in 2020, unmasked the ideal of secular neutrality to reveal only a delusion.

The point of the present post is one part of my January article on the 2020 Election, and below I have expanded upon that passage.

But first, Sarah Hoyt (and thanks for the Instalink): Nancy Pelosi's

opponent is an idiot — and not an American — by saying that Trump should have “Accepted” the election results. I’ll assume he doesn’t understand mathematics or didn’t watch the results come in. NO ONE should accept impossible results that almost guarantee an election was tampered with. That’s known as disenfranchising the people, and any American should be revolted at the idea. There’s nothing sacred against election results. If there’s sufficient reason to SUSPECT let alone prove tampering, they should be examined, investigated and dissected. Which always happened till 2020. In 2020 the results were untouchable because they couldn’t stand examination. In the same way her opponent seems to only know the “made for TV” bs about January 6th. Taking a guided tour of the capitol is no insurrection, and no one should feel they have to bow to little Nancy’s insanity on that.

• Expanded from American Thinker's Let's Stop Using the Words "Trump Tried to Overturn the 2020 Election":

When describing the 2020 election, all the left is doing is repeat incessantly — they don't even bother using their usual weasel tactic of referring to (unnamed) experts, although that is implicit — that Trump's claim are "baseless" or "unfounded", if not an outright lie (or "the big lie"), all the while calling us skeptics "conspiracy theorists", without ever giving, at least once in a while, some evidence thereof.

Just presenting one in-depth single article or news story in which every one of Trump's claims is meticulously picked apart and debunked might be enough, and the New York Times and the Washington Post could refer to it by linking the word "baseless" or "lie" in every every other subsequent news story to it.  But that "ur-article" does not seem to exist in any editorial office.

As Dennis Prager puts it, in today's America (and world),

all you have to say to people who went to college is "Experts say" … As I've said for years, for the secular college graduate, "Experts say" is what "Thus sayeth the Lord" has been to religious people for thousands of years.  They have just exchanged authority from the Lord to "the experts"…

In this case, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and CNN don't even use "experts say", knowing that that would sound ridiculous (who on Earth — what individual — can be called an unassailable expert on the matter of election results if there have been shenanigans which by definition are stealthy and which the so-called expert cannot possibly know anything about) while betting — incredibly, with no lack of success — on nobody challenging their basic gaslighting about Trump's "baseless" claims and his desire to "overturn" an election and, indeed, democracy itself.

I'm not very religious myself, but if you read the books in Dennis Prager's Rational Bible series ("The title of [these five commentaries] is “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based … The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone"), you will get an idea of the real reason why religion has such a bad reputation. What does it mean to be religious? Does it mean believing in (alleged) fairy tales or going to Church/Synagogue with foolish believers with silly smiles on their faces?

It means nothing but this, says Dennis Prager: live and work (and… govern) while trying to integrate the Golden Rule and the Ten Commandments into your life. Now, before you protest that you don't want, or need, a religious lesson: think of "do not steal" and "do not kill" (do not murder in the original Hebrew); isn't that pretty good governance for a society that even an atheist can, without renouncing his atheism or agnosticism and without joining any religion, subscribe to?!

Ah, but there's the rub: to the leftist, actually, the 10 Commandments turn out to be one heck of a major problem.

Leftists at the head of a nanny government obviously don't think you are their equals, socialists do not believe in "do not covet" (taxes), communists do not believe in "do not kill", nanny governments do not believe in "honoring your father and mother" (your family) — certainly not above Big Brother — and above all, all of the above do not believe in "Do not bear false witness."

(If you protest, "Let's not get carried away, Erik, surely you cannot deny that some amount of taxes are necessary in life?!", Harry Jaffa provides the answer: "Those who live under the law have an equal right in the making of the law, [while] those who make the law have a corresponding duty to live under the law." Incidentally, this also pertains to the January 6 kerfuffle…)

Bearing false witness: leftists allow themselves to lie to others, and they allow themselves to lie to themselves — all to bask in their own valor and glory, as these knights in shining armor turn everything upside down.

Because they are Drama Queens, leftists allow themselves to wield double standards and to lie about global warming, about the rise of the oceans, about Republicans being Hitler, about leftist riots versus right-wing protests, about illegal immigrants and how they have no papers, about racism, about COVID, about 1776 replaced with 1619, about American culture (structural racism), about sexism, about rape culture, about men identifying as girls participating in women's sports, about suicide being a benevolent thing ("Do not kill" applies also to yourself), about the horrendous (Bible-based) Western civilization, about the ghastly sins of despicable Republicans like Donald Trump, George W Bush, and Ronald Reagan vs the "ho-hum" at-best-insignificant lapses of valorous Democrats like Joe Biden, Barack Obama and the Clintons, about how the MAGA movement is traitorous, about how the January 6 protesters deserve up to two dozen years in prison while releasing true criminals onto the streets, about how the communists were honorable ("sure they killed millions of people, but, hey, they had good intentions"), and about wokeness uncovering a true picture of society.

In short, they can lie about how despicable their neighbors are and how valorous they themselves are to attack said neighbors, aka their (non-threatening) adversaries.

Speaking of the Bible, incidentally, does it not mention false pride as the cardinal sin? Wouldn't that cover yourself self-describing as valorous for "saving the planet" and "saving democracy"?

No wonder leftists praise l'état laïc and want the Judeo-Christian religion to have nothing to do with politics…

It also explains the antisemitism and anti-Americanism through the centuries and the millennia, Israel and the United States being the two nations that have most followed the precepts of the Judeo-Christian Bible, not least the Golden Rule (and have prospered as a consequence) — and thus at least tried to prevent politicians and citizens alike from lying to others as well as to themselves. This brings us, full circle, back to Dennis Prager, writing (in Whites Aren't Hated for Slavery but for Making America and the West),

the left … hates America, which it regards as the paragon of capitalism. By becoming the most successful country in history, America, the quintessential capitalist country, remains a living rebuke to everything the left stands for. If America can be brought down, every left-wing egalitarian dream can be realized. … What the left does very much seek is to destroy America as we have known it -- the capitalist and Judeo-Christian enclave of personal freedom.

Mark Levin's latest book is called The Democrat Party Hates America.  The truth, as we have seen with the Woke movement, is that leftist scholars and activists hate American institutions, the Left hates American values, leftists hate American history, leftists hate American liberty, leftists abhor the Judeo-Christian religion (because of its Golden Rule and its Ten Commandments), and Democrats have hated Republicans since the movement was born in 1854.

Parkinson’s Swedish Law

As battles rage in America regarding the rise of the minimum wage, a letter to the editor of The Economist contains good advice (indirectly) from C. Northcote Parkinson:

Parkinson’s Swedish Law

Bartleby’s column on pointless tasks mentioned Parkinson’s Law: work expands to fill the time available [June 2nd, 2018]. C. Northcote Parkinson invented another, not-quite-so-famous law when he gave a speech to the Swedish Employers’ Confederation in 1980.

“Aim at prosperity and employment will follow.
Aim at employment and you will get anything but prosperity.”

That is still good advice for parties trying to combat unemployment. Parkinson called it his Swedish Law.

This war is like few others because the crucial theater is underground; Hamas is often underground, the Israelis are often aboveground, with Hamas seeking to position civilians directly between them

Perhaps you have seen a pro-Hamas meme on Facebook or elsewhere on the internet, with two photos comparing ruins in some Ukraine city with ruins in Gaza, the latter being far more extensive, and accompanied by some anti-Israeli question or comment.

Something of that nature (Shalom to Sarah Hoyt) leads to ask the following question in the New York Times: What Would You Have Israel Do to Defend Itself?

There seems to be a broad consensus atop the Democratic Party about the war in Gaza, structured around two propositions. First, after the attacks of Oct. 7, Israel has the right to defend itself and defeat Hamas. Second, the way Israel is doing this is “over the top,” in President Biden’s words. The vast numbers of dead and starving children are gut wrenching, the devastation is overwhelming, and it’s hard not to see it all as indiscriminate.

Which leads to an obvious question: If the current Israeli military approach is inhumane, what’s the alternative? Is there a better military strategy Israel can use to defeat Hamas without a civilian blood bath? In recent weeks, I’ve been talking with security and urban warfare experts and others studying Israel’s approach to the conflict and scouring foreign policy and security journals in search of such ideas.

The thorniest reality that comes up is that this war is like few others because the crucial theater is underground. … The current Israeli estimates range from 350 to about 500 miles of tunnels. The tunnel network, according to Israel, is where Hamas lives, holds hostages, stores weapons, builds missiles and moves from place to place. By some Israeli estimates, building these tunnels cost the Gazan people about a billion dollars, which could have gone to building schools and starting companies.

Hamas built many of its most important military and strategic facilities under hospitals, schools and so on. Its server farm, for example, was built under the offices of the U.N. relief agency in Gaza City, according to the Israeli military.

… in this war, Hamas is often underground, the Israelis are often aboveground, and Hamas seeks to position civilians directly between them. As Barry Posen, a professor at the security studies program at M.I.T., has written, Hamas’s strategy could be “described as ‘human camouflage’ and more ruthlessly as ‘human ammunition.’” Hamas’s goal is to maximize the number of Palestinians who die and in that way build international pressure until Israel is forced to end the war before Hamas is wiped out. Hamas’s survival depends on support in the court of international opinion and on making this war as bloody as possible for civilians, until Israel relents.

… In part because of the tunnels, Israel has caused more destruction in Gaza than Syria did in Aleppo and more than Russia did in Mariupol, according to an Associated Press analysis.

… John Spencer is the chair of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point, served two tours in Iraq and has made two visits to Gaza during the current war to observe operations there. He told me that Israel has done far more to protect civilians than the United States did in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In Spain in 1937 and 1938, many thousands of Leftists of all descriptions, were executed or tortured to death in Communist prisons (one who escaped was George Orwell)

On this day, VICTIMS OF COMMUNISM DAY (spasiba to Tovarich Glenn Reynolds), and in view of Ed Driscoll's thorough post over at Instapundit on George Orwell and his Spanish War period (gracias por los Instavínculos, compañeros Ed Driscoll y Sarah Hoyt), I would like to take the opportunity to add to the discussion by quoting from Paul Johnson's history of the 20th century, from which there is much to learn, not least the appalling truth about the "Republican" camp during the Spanish Civil War.

Tom Wolfe is quoted as saying that, with the publication of the Venona transcripts, “it turns out that “the Loyalists secretly called in the Soviets at the very outset of hostilities—and if they’d won, Spain would have been the first Soviet puppet state!”

True enough. But according to Modern Times (A History of the World from the 1920s to the 1990s), Paul Johnson points out that while the war lasted, this was already the case: the Kremlin's Soviet NKVD (forerunner of the KGB), not the Spanish, were in fact already in charge of the country (or of that part held by the so-called Loyalists).

Behind [Prime Minister Juan] Negrin's complaisant ignorance, the Communists — that is, Stalin's secret police — took over Republican Spain.  The result was one of the major political tragedies of the century

Among the things the reader learns from Chapter Nine (The High Noon of Aggression) is that during

the rest of 1937 and well into 1938, many thousands of POUM members, and indeed other Leftists of all descriptions, were executed or tortured to death in Communist prisons.  They included a large number of foreigners  …  Among those … who managed to escape were Orwell and Willy Brandt, the future German Chancellor

Indeed,

Andrès Nin, the POUM leader [was] the model for Orwell's hero Goldstein in Nineteen Eighty-Four

Although "Germany, Russia and Italy [all] had gangster dictatorships", ironically,

On the whole, European Communists were safer in their own fascist homelands than in the 'Socialist mother-country'.  Roy Medvedev, the independent Soviet Marxist historian, noted:  "It is a terrible paradox that most European Communist leaders and activists who lived in the USSR perished, while most of those who were in prison in their native lands in 1937-8 survived.'

… The purge coincided with Stalin's massacre of his own party in Russia, and it bore all the marks of his methods [what with] the former Barcelona convent of St Ursula [becoming] known as 'the Dachau of Republican Spain'

… It was one of Spain's many misfortunes at this time that her … Civil War coincided with the climax of Stalin's great terror

… Stalin was having his leading agents killed all over the world in 1937-8.  And, as in Russia, virtually all the creatures who helped him to take over the Left in Spain, and then to terrorize it, were murdered in turn

And, perhaps as interesting is the group, the circle of intellectuals, that Orwell also managed to "escape" from:

… Throughout the Spanish war, Stalinism was assisted not only by superb public relations but by naivety, gullibility and, it must also be said, the mendacity and corruption of Western intellectuals

… The intellectuals of the Left did not want to know the objective truth; they were unwilling for their illusions to be shattered.  Many of them treated 'the Party' with abject subservience

… The attempt by Western intellectuals to defend Stalinism involved them in a process of self-corruption which transferred to them, and so to their countries, which their writings helped to shape, some of the moral decay inherent in totalitarianism itself, especially its denial of individual responsibility for good or ill
More generally, from Paul Johnson's previous chapter (Chapter Eight), The Devils, we learn the many ways in which the autocrats of the left (Lenin, Stalin, Mao, etc…) and of the right (Hitler, Mussolini, Pétain, etc…) inspired, complemented, and even conspired with, one another:

… the way in which the pursuit of Utopia leads the tiny handful of men in power abruptly to assault a society many centuries in the making, to treat men like ants and to stamp on their nest

… It was Stalin who pointed the way to Hitler

… Under the influence of Stalin, the German CP made no real distinction between the Social Democrats ('Social Fascists') and Hitler.  Their leader, Ernst Thälmann, told the Reichstag on 11 February 1930 that fascism was already in power in Germany, when the head of the government was a Social Democrat

… Like Lenin he [Hitler] was a gnostic

… From the end of 1936 to the second half of 1938, Stalin struck at every group in the regime  …        He had been in secret negotiations with Hitler since 1935.  The following year he persuaded the Nazi government to concoct forged evidence of secret contacts between the Soviet army commander, Marshal Tukhachevsky, and Hitler's generals; it was done by the Gestapo and transmitted by one of its agents

One of my very first posts on the internet, 20 years ago or more, was about Chile's Allende and Pinochet, but used the Spanish Civil War to make a significant point:

Again and again, the truth eventually reveals how the sequels "of arrests, death, torture, and exile" are often worse under would-be leftist authoritarian régimes than under rightist ones. Stalin, of course, killed far more people than Hitler did, and a … best-seller (Checas de Madrid by César Vidal) teaches that the Spanish Republicans ran a series of sinister detention centers patterned on the Soviet Checas, which savagely tortured and often slaughtered its prisoners, without the slightest hint of legality; the dead and disappeared in the province of Madrid alone were, in only a couple of years, almost four times as numerous as the victims over 17 years of none other than… Chile's Pinochet (almost 12,000 in Madrid versus some 3,000 in Chile). In the Miami Herald, Carlos Alberto Montaner added that before going after alleged criminals abroad, such Europeans as Judge Baltasar Garzón would perhaps do better to start bringing their own killers (both left and right) to justice.

The main post on Paul Johnson's Modern Times (A History of the World from the 1920s to the 1990s) — with many more excerpts from the 780-page book — is here:

When a society prioritizes simplicity in government, citizens are freer; When they’re freer, they produce and trade more

The War on Poverty Makes Poverty Worse writes Christopher Baecker of Mises Wire.

Poverty is the natural, initial state. Society wasn’t just born into affluence; it had to be created. As new Argentine president Javier Milei reminded attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last month, humans trudged along for hundreds of years at little more than subsistence level.

Then, at the elbow of the classic hockey stick graph he cited, economic growth started skyrocketing. A few things coincided with that.

The Industrial Revolution and the publication of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations were two. If the only achievement of that book was promoting the virtues of specialization, it would have been enough.

Another thing happened the same year that Mr. Smith’s book was published: the United States was born. When a society prioritizes simplicity in government, citizens are freer. When they’re freer, they produce and trade more. That is what immigrants found when they came here.

Mayorkas Trial Dismissed in the Democrat Senate: A Varvel Cartoon on Two-Tiered Justice

A Gary Varvel "Monopoly" card (or cartoon) on two-tiered justice

Why two-tiered? You're joking, right?
Compare with Donald Trump
(not just now, but over the past decade or so)…

Paraphrasing Eisenhower, Richard Nixon warned against "the Media Élitist Complex"; "Sullivan vs New York Times is in effect a license to lie"

On this, the 30th anniversary of the death of Richard Nixon, we get an excerpt from the oral history collections of the University of Georgia (thanks to Vincent Bourdonneau — as well as to Sarah Hoyt), a number of which seem to have started circulating recently.

Notice notably the 37th president's take on the élites, without seemingly realizing to what extent they were united across country boundaries and borders and to what extent they pose a danger to America and to the world…

The élite class is the same all over the world: they go to the same parties and they drink the [same] cocktails, etc, they have the same snobbish characteristics…

Then we have Nixon Warning of the Media's UNLIMITED Power

The problem is, that [the media in this country] have a sense of self-righteousness, a double standard on issue after issue after issue. They can find everything wrong with somebody else, but they will not look inside, and ever admit they could be wrong themselves. And — what was involved here, in the Watergate thing, was the unfairness of it. Oh, there was a legitimate thing to investigate, but they refused to balance it. They allowed their advocacy to get ahead of their reporting — which is their job to do.

You know, President Eisenhower, in his farewell address, wrote about, and warned against, the power of the military-industrial complex. … When I get old enough, and decide to retire … I think I would warn against the media-élitist complex. You know, the media is always talking about the imperial presidency — the power of the imperial presidency — I think we oughta hear a little bit of discussion of the imperial media, and its power. … The media's power is unlimited. And some would say, "Well, what about libel suits?" Forget it. After the Supreme Court's decision in Sullivan vs New York Times a few years ago. … I wouldn't like to leave the fate of this country to the editors of the Washington Post. …

Let's face it, Sullivan vs New York Times is in effect a license to lie. … I believe in a free press. I do not want government control under any circumstances, or government censorship, of either radio, television, or newspapers. But I am simply suggesting here that all of the media should look within themselves, look through that microscope at themselves, look in the mirror now and then, rather than looking out there to others.

At the same time, we cannot ignore the outstanding book by Evelyne Joslain, a bona fide French conservative who laments that neither Nixon nor Reagan (no "Reagan revolution", alas, on the cultural front), for all their (undeniable) virtues, seemed to show true awareness of the takeover of the culture by the left and their march through the institutions.

Nixon was … the first Republican president confronted with the [Left's] culture war and viciously harassed by the opposition [while] Reagan did nothing about the persecution of political correctness. He let it happen.

In the perspective of all the above, let us jump 25 to 30 years forward, to see the treatment of Richard Milhous Nixon compared with that of Donald John Trump (who, according to La Révolution Culturelle, is the only presidential candidate to see the true nature of the Left):

"The revelations of this man's crimes": Adolf Hitler and the Depraved Nazis in Private Life

In the past few years, there have been a number of articles and books on Hitler's private life and his inner circle, not least in the Historie monthly, Denmark's History magazine, and the Claude Quétel book Dans l’intimité d’Hitler (les manies d’un dictateur).

There is much to learn about the Hitler Family and its descendants, including Geli Raubal and Romano Lukas Hitler, along with, needless to say, Eva Braun, Adolf Hitler’s Mistress, Wife, And Suicide Partner — not to mention Hitler's majordomo, Heinz Linge, his personal pilot, Hans Baur, and his secretary (about which, more below).

"Hitler Joins U.S. Navy"

The most interesting member of the Hitler family is perhaps the one who gave rise to the World War II-era newspaper account titled "Hitler Joins U.S. Navy." It turned out not to be Adolf, of course, but Adolf's half-nephew William P. Hitler, who was born and grew up in the British Isles, emigrating eventually to the U.S. not long before Pearl Harbor where he indeed joined the American military during the conflict. (No details on whether William Patrick Hitler served in the Atlantic Ocean, i.e., in the European theater against Germany, or in the Pacific theater — something which seems to be of some importance; by comparison, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team composed of Japanese-American troops [the most decorated unit of the war] did not see action in the Pacific but in Europe.)

Beyond that, we have information on Hitler's book, Mein Kampf, on Nazi propaganda, on Hitler's Supporters, on Hitler's election, on Kristalnacht, on Hitler's death in The Führerbunker — Adolf Hitler’s Final Hideout — and on conspiracy theories about the Führer's death (or fate). (Some of the hyperlinks point to articles in French, which can be copy/pasted into a translation app.)

Expanding further, also beyond World War II, we have information about the Mussolini years, about how il Duce was the socialist who invented fascism, about the original significance of the Swastika, about Franco, about the 1934 World Cup, and about the time when the IRA became the ally of Hitler's Germany.

What is perhaps most interesting is the extent to which just about all of the top Nazis turned out to be perverts (remember the brownshirts' Ernst Röhm?), with their fixations on, say, the Third Reich's female movie stars (see the Isabelle Mity investigation). This leads to Reed Tucker's New York post article, The twisted sex lives of Nazis — and the women who loved them

Le rôle des grandes actrices de cinéma pendant le IIIe Reich décrypté dans l'enquête d'Isabelle Mity
Let Hitler's secretary bring this story together, as recounted by Jean-Jacques Allevi in the Géo monthly:

"After the revelations of this man's crimes, I will live until my last hour with the feeling of having been an accomplice..." Traudl Junge, Hitler's naive and carefree secretary, delivers this confession in her memories (Until the Final Hour), which inspired the film Downfall. Until her death, she will be prey to guilt, undermined by depression taking her back to the time when she lived in the intimacy of the Führer.

... When Hitler goes looking for a new secretary, she is summoned with other employees. Is it her youth, her Munich origins, or her resemblance to Eva Braun? The fact remains that she is recruited to take down the Führer's words in shorthand. “From then on, there were few days when I did not see Hitler, work and share my meals with him. »

At 22, she accompanies him everywhere, to his Berghof chalet, to the Wolf's Lair, his Prussian haunt... She participates in the daily life of the “leader's” inner circle: “Hitler was charming. A simple and good-humored host who entertains in his country house… We laughed a lot.” Fireside discussions sometimes drag on until 6 a.m. without the war or the death camps being discussed. Her role — that of a companion rather than a secretary — becomes burdensome to her. “I had the impression of being a prisoner in a golden cage, from which I would have liked to leave… When I go back, I miss the memory of what was terrible in the world.”

On April 30, 1945, Hitler commits suicide

In 1945, in Hitler's bunker, she celebrated the dictator's birthday on April 20. As a farewell gift, she receives one of the ten poison capsules that the Führer distributes to his loved ones. On April 29, Hitler dictated his will to her. The secretary, who never joined the Nazi party, blackens “the last page of the history of the Reich”. The next day, Hitler committed suicide: “With him disappeared the hypnotic pressure under which we lived. »

... Becoming a member of the cultural forum of the SPD, the social democratic party, she underlined, in 2001, "how easy it was to succumb to the fascination of Hitler and difficult to live knowing that you served a mass criminal. Beautiful facades are often deceptive, it is always worth taking a look behind.” Traudl Junge died in 2002, shortly before the publication of her memories which illustrate “the banality of evil” theorized by Hannah Arendt.

33 Photos Of The Liberation Of Auschwitz, The Nazi Concentration Camp Where More Than A Million People Were Killed

Here is the French original of Jean-Jacques Allevi's text in Géo.

On riait beaucoup.

• Ray Comfort, whose “Hitler, God and the Bible” points out Hitler devised a master strategy to crush all Christian churches, explains that it would be either ignorant or disingenuous to call Hitler a Christian:

In a special Christian Broadcasting Network program, Comfort cites the head of Hitler Youth, Boldur von Schirach, who said, “Destruction of Christianity was explicitly recognized as a purpose of the National Socialist Movement.”

… The CBN program explains how Hitler put on a religious, even Christian, façade, until he became powerful.

… But later one of his inner circle acknowledged: “I’m absolutely clear in my own mind, and I think I can speak for the Fuhrer as well, that both the Catholic and Protestant churches will vanish from the life of our people.”

How Hitler's Nazi propaganda machine tried to take Christ out of Christmas

… the way Christmas was used by the atheist Nazis, who tried to turn it into a pagan winter solstice celebration.

… 'Christmas was a provocation for the Nazis - after all, the baby Jesus was a Jewish child,' Judith Breuer told the German newspaper Spiegel. 'The most important celebration in the year didn't fit with their racist beliefs so they had to react, by trying to make it less Christian.'

The exhibition includes swastika-shaped cookie-cutters and Christmas tree baubles shaped like Iron Cross medals.

The Nazis attempted to persuade housewives to bake cookies in the shape of swastikas, and they replaced the Christian figure of Saint Nicholas, who traditionally brings German children treats on December 6, with the Norse god Odin.

The symbol that posed a particular problem for the Nazis was the star, which traditionally decorates Christmas trees.

… The is a legacy of the Nazi Christmas. The wartime version of the traditional Christmas carol 'Unto us a time has come' is still sung. 'The Nazis took out the references to Jesus and made it into a song about walking through the snow,' Breuer said.

Surprisingly, German churches put up little opposition to the Nazification of Christmas. 'You would have expected them to protest loudly and insist that it was a Christian festival,' said Breuer. 'But instead they largely kept quiet, out of fear.'

"You Have Wiped Israel Off the Map!" Clash on French TV As Pro-Palestine Speaker Tries to Gaslight the Fact that Her Palestine Logo Has Made Israel Vanish

A conference on Palestine at the university of Lille by one of France's main leftist parties has been shut down after it transpired that the logo of the conference showing a map of the region — a map of, quote, "FREE Palestine" — has made Israel vanish.

More than that: The ban took place in the wake of an LFI poster showing Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Rima Hassan announcing a conference on "the current situation in Palestine" with the word Israel nowhere to be seen and, as mentioned, the Jewish state having totally disappeared in the "FREE Palestine" map (at bottom right).

La France Insoumise (LFI or Unyielding France) is France's most far-left party, a kind of successor to the French Communist Party, with former (?) Communist Jean-Luc Mélenchon as its head and regular presidential candidate.

From the Morandini talk show on the C News channel:

“There is no Israel on the poster. Does that mean that you want Israel to disappear?!” Jean-Marc Morandini asked an LFI representative repeatedly. “But not at all! We want the Palestinian people to be free. The logo is very clear,” replied Karima Khatim, an LFI municipal representative from Blanc-Mesnil.

Very quickly, tempers rose. "You are showing bad faith! You don't understand anything! What this poster shows is the destruction of Israel! Your party is an anti-Semitic party!" charged Karim Maloum. “Sir, just for your words, I could sue you! People are fed up with being called anti-Semites when they [do nothing but] defend the Palestinian cause. We want a two-state solution,” declared Karima Khatim.

"You do?!" retorted Jean-Marc Morandini, again and again. "Really?! Where do you see two states on the poster?! There is a difference between what you say and what we see. Where do you see the two states?!" But he never got an answer from his guest.

"You cannot in any way see the presence of Israel on this poster. All the facts speak against you. You are incapable of recognizing what is going on. You are exasperating the viewers of CNews," said Captain Hervé Moreau.

Check out the Morandini website for the videos: the arguing is in French (naturellement), but it is not hard to understand how Karima Khatim is going ballistic, interrupting everybody, and gaslighting her audience (as well as herself?), claiming that she can't see where there is a problem.

This is the second ban in Europe within the space of a day or two — the other on the other side of the spectrum, concerning a conference on National Conservatism in Brussels.

As it happens, President Macron has announced that he disagrees with the Lille region prefect's ban, stating that

I am for respecting the laws of la République. Afterwards, as far as I am concerned, I am always in favor of people being able to express themselves freely, even as I am prepared to fight their ideas
But that might seem to smack of double standards: the C News channel is seen as so far to the right (although not with regards to American issues, not to the point of preferring Trump over Biden) that there have been rumors that there are members of the French government who are attempting to shut it down as well.
