Have you ever heard European tirades against the likes of Disneyland and Las Vegas, and how they show the superficiality of the American character? Imagine their laughter if an American city made a habit of importing sand and potted palm trees to simulate a fake beach within its boundaries for the duration of the summer.
I happen to enjoy Paris-Plage as much as any other Parisian, but! because this trend has started in Europe, it is nothing to laugh at or raise one's nose at; au contraire! It is lauded as informal, jovial, unifying, sympa, etc, etc, etc…
