Another thing I have never forgotten from my witty (and deadpan) SMU professor in his Introduction to Psychology class in the 1980s (and that I have never tried personally) was as follows:
Hold the crying infant face up over his or her bed, lectured William Tedford, by only an inch or a centimeter or so. Then, pull away your hands suddenly, so that he or she drops on his or her back. Supposedly this makes the baby so astonished that the crying stops instantly.
