Gitmo has 460 prisoners, a figure the press holds back for fear of eliciting a “so what” when put in perspective. Le Monde’s intellectual gulag has a circulation of 400 000 and dwindling. Despite the difference in scale, they inspire similar fears:Journalists Philippe Cohen and Pierre Pean say the paper has become a "modern-day Pravda" run in a "climate of fear" by an unscrupulous triumvirate.
Albeit Gitmo scares murderous malcontents, and Le Monde goes for the socially low-hanging fruit by scaring it’s readers.
